Favelas, also known as Slums, are informal communities within cities that emerge through social-economical conditions. They can house thousands of people and are very common in developing countries like Brazil, Argentina, and India.
These communities don’t have a formal development method and tend to create a complex cluster of housing that often gain a negative viewpoint from the outside community.
To change this view, the artists Jeroen Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn of Haas&Hahn decided to apply a simple solution to this community. The use of painting in the wall, the graffiti techniques to redefine the favela, and make it more welcoming and cozy to the inhabitants.
All the time we had spent on the neighborhood was maybe actually even more important than the painting itself
